Sport Hillwalking

Shortly after Ireland’s County High Points: A Walking Guide was published in 2012, I recognised the potential of an All-Ireland sports competition for hillwalkers. At that time, I had considered the County High Points as the core list for such a competition. But with only 27 locations, it was quickly dismissed. And so, I decided to develop a brand new original list for the purpose: Ireland’s Major Geographical High Points. This and 5 of its sub-lists (all published in 2015) were the very first original Irish hill lists to be published in the 21st century. The full list of 187 High Points became the playing field for the first ever All-Ireland Sport Hillwalking competition, hosted by High Point Ireland. The current Irish Sport Hillwalking list, comprising all 355 High Points and mountain summits in Ireland, forms the core of the official All-Ireland Hillwalking Championships. I am involved in organising the Championships each year and will always aim to score a few points myself throughout the season.
